Francis acquired knowledge and experience in electrical power systems in eastern and southern African countries over a period of four decades. He has concluded that the Old Way of thinking, which focuses on self-interests, is the root cause of the extreme poverty and hunger, poor health and education and learning, environmental degradation, economic stagnation and low levels of energy access on the African continent. He is now working on a New Way of thinking that promotes critical thinking, nurtures leadership and embraces the flow of energy and information, the most critical ingredients for social and economic development and growth, from points of origin to the points of utilisation to meet the requirements of users, also known as Energy and Information Logistics (EiL). The New Way thinking and analysis of the energy performance of electrical power systems is based on an energy losses reduction methodology approved by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). He released (30) thirty top performing wheat varieties , most of which possess pre-harvest sprouting tolerance with some carrying very strong gluten protein fractions useful in gristing utilities, thereby relieving costly importation of overseas hard red wheat grain for this purpose.

Dr Ephrame Havazvidi is Pioneer in the Research field specifically concerned with improvement of physical and genetic purity plus quality of seed produced by Seed Producers of hybrid maize seed, in particular: In his Seed Production Technology Research , he ascertained pertinent factors which influence effectiveness of Time Isolation and Distance Isolation in the prevention of genetic contamination in hybrid maize seed as caused by neighbouring foreign pollen sources. Dr Havazvidi also established optimum female: male planting ratios and planting patterns in combination with optimum plant densities in the parents. Dr Havazvidi derived recommendations of tolerances of rogue plants and undetasseled female plants in hybrid maize seed production fields in the same research programme . He has recently developed maize inbreds which confer extreme heat and drought stress tolerance coupled with Nitrogen Use Efficiency (NUE), while combining well for wide adaptation and high grain yield expression.

12:40 – 1:00 pm (Thursday, December 10) – Zimbabwe Time

Professor Innocent Chirisa
Dean of the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences
Professor in the Department of Demography
University of Zimbabwe
Harare, Zimbabwe

ID 371: Social Sciences, Services and Industrialisation in Zimbabwe: Shaping the Debate and Practice

Innocent Chirisa is a Professor in the Department of Demography Settlement and Development at the University of Zimbabwe.
