Presentation Title: Why, What & How of Economics in Engineering Curricula: A Case of India

Economics was first used in engineering by a civil engineer, Arthur M. Wellington, when he was working on railway tracks in the USA during the latter part of the 19th century. Looking at the significance, gradually it became a part of the engineering curricula even in India. However, the approach towards adoption is casual.

The technical intensity has increased manifold even in the non-technical sectors during the post-globalisation period, and an engineer is expected to consider more economic factors for the success of his engineering project than it may have been considered earlier. All such probable factors will be discussed.

Presentation Title – Responsible Business in Action: Embedding Worker Well-being as the Core of Social Sustainability

Abstract

The idea of responsible business is evolving from a focus on compliance and philanthropy to one centered on how enterprises engage with and enable their people. In today’s complex business environment, ensuring worker well-being is not a separate social goal but an integral part of how sustainability is lived and practiced within organizations.

Drawing from Social Compact’s work with over 65 companies across sectors, this session shares experiences of how businesses are embedding worker well-being and social sustainability into their everyday systems, decisions, and culture. It highlights the approaches that have helped companies move from intent to meaningful action — building leadership ownership, fostering inclusive practices, and creating mechanisms that enhance dignity, safety, and opportunity for all categories of workers.

The presentation will also reflect on insights from Social Compact’s recent collaboration with Zomato in developing a Delivery Partner Well-being Framework, which demonstrates how principles of responsible business can be adapted for new and emerging forms of work.

Through stories and evidence, the session explores what it means to practice responsibility in action — where worker well-being becomes both a measure and expression of sustainable business.
