Komatsu Plant Tour – Milwaukee
Located in Milwaukee’s Harbor District, Komatsu’s Mining Technologies global headquarters is a 58-acre campus that includes a 180,000-square-foot office building and a 430,000-square-foot manufacturing facility. It produces major components for large mining machines, including electric rope shovels, hybrid shovels, draglines and blasthole drills. The location serves as the center of excellence for large gearing, large fabrication and machining across Komatsu’s surface mining businesses. Komatsu held an official ribbon cutting ceremony in 2022 alongside stakeholders to celebrate and welcome the community to its South Harbor Campus.
Designed to leverage technology and open spaces, the facility is LEED Gold certified and designed with several notable sustainability features, including wind spires, solar panels and a closed-loop system designed to collect and conserve water. Additionally, efficient HVAC systems allow for facility wide energy management featuring smart systems to reduce energy demands and LED lighting throughout.
Visit the facility and check out the equipment monuments featuring a 4100A electric mining shovel and 830E electric drive truck. The shovel was originally built in 1995 and has 25 years of service mining copper in the Rio Tinto Kennecott Bingham Canyon Mine in Utah. The electric drive truck was assembled in 2012 for autonomous solutions testing at Komatsu’s Proving Grounds in Arizona. Visitors can also stroll along Greenfield Avenue to learn from educational nodes that highlight renewable energy, water, energy innovation and the company’s history.
The public is also welcome to stop inside the facility’s lobby to view the Customer Experience Center, check out the company store, and enjoy a drink at Komatsu’s Mineral Point Coffee Bar, which features Anodyne coffee, assorted teas and bakery goods. The store and coffee shop are open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. and take credit cards only.
