IEOM Society International addresses the issues of Global Engineering Education. There are various levels of readiness of engineering graduates from various parts of the world. One of the main themes is how to reduce the readiness gap of engineering graduates around the world. The special focus is given to Industrial Engineering and Manufacturing Engineering including Engineering Management. Are the engineering graduates ready to take on the challenges of the current global economy? With the great success of Global Engineering Education Series of last IEOM conferences, IEOM Zambia Conference will have a dedicated session for the 38th Global Engineering Education where distinguished speakers will discuss the readiness of engineering graduates for workforce around the world. Featured speakers will be from various part of the world to address engineering education challenges and opportunities.

Engr. Prof. Amevi Acakpovi is a Professor in the Electrical/Electronic Engineering, the Pro Vice-Chancellor of Accra Technical University and a Fellow Professional Engineer from the Institution of Engineering and Technology-Ghana.
He received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer and Electrical Engineering from the Lokossa Institute of Technology (Republic of Benin) in 2006 and a Certificate of Designer
Engineer (Eq. MSc.) in Electrical Engineering Option Control of Industrial Process from the Abomey-Calavi University (Republic of Benin) in 2009. Dr. Acakpovi further pursued a PhD degree in Energy Systems Engineering from a joint collaboration between the Open University Malaysia and the Accra Institute of Technology at Accra, Ghana from 2011 to 2017. During his PhD studies, Dr. Acakpovi developed and implemented with software, prominent solutions to cost optimization problem of Hybrid Energy Systems (HES) using metaheuristic optimization techniques like particle swarm optimization and additionally developed and tested a general framework for optimizing HES.
Prof. Acakpovi is the author of more than 120 publications in International Journals including IEEE conferences, and transactions as well as other SCI-Indexed and EI-Indexed journals. Prof. Acakpovi has spoken in many international conferences as Guest Speaker and is the reviewer of many journals including IEEE transaction in Sustainable Energy, International Journal of Renewable Energy Researcher (IJRER), the Journal of Energy (Elsevier/Science Direct) and many others. His additional research interests include: Hybrid Energy Systems, Mini and Microgrid Optimization, Smart Grid Modelling and Optimization, Solar and Wind Energy Modelling and Optimization, Artificial Intelligence in Energy Systems and Recommender Systems. He, also organized and co-chaired a number of international conference and has experienced as book editor.
Prof. Acakpovi was a recipient of the SILVER AWARD – Engineering, Science, Technology & Innovation in October 2014 at the International Research Initiative Conference (IRIC) in Accra, Ghana. He also received in 2012 an Award of Innovation in Engineering at the 1st Applied Research Conference in Africa (ARCA), in August 2012 at Cape-Coast, Ghana. In addition, Prof. Acakpovi received in 2018, the Best Paper Award at the 7th IEEE International Conference on Adaptive Science and Technology and subsequently the best track paper award in project management at the IEOM conference in South Africa in 2018. He also received the award of the decade researcher at the Applied Research Conference in Africa (ARCA) in August 20221 and the Stairs Award of Distinguished Professor in Electrical Engineering, Pune, India in December, 2021.
He has won a number of grants and academic laurels in his areas of study. He is a winner of COTVET grant for skill development project windows 2, year 2018 and has also won a number of grants and awards to attend short trainings abroad. He also won the MIDA grant for the establishment of a Sustainable Service Centre that run energy related programmes.
He serves a number of national and international committees including chairing of the Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) committee, at the African level. Prof Acakpovi is also the Elected Vice President of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) Ghana Chapter and a Consultant to the Ghana Standard Authority for the review of Electrotechnical Standards. Prof Acakpovi is a married Christian with children, counsellor, mentor and career guider. His leadership abilities led many to succeed in their career, to undertake further studies, to take up new challenges in their job leading to promotion etc. Inspired by John C. Maxwell leadership teaching, Prof Acakpovi is truly a great leader who has what it takes to make people achieve greater heights in their endeavor. His drives for excellence, integrity and innovation are unprecedented and great assets to his community and the world at large.

Mohd Helmy Abd Wahab is a senior lecturer and former Head of Intelligent System Lab at the Department of Computer Engineering, Faculty of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM). He has actively involved in many academic activities such as being invited speaker at ICRITO 2015 (India), IPIARTI 2015 (UTP), IPIARTI2014 (UNIMAP) and IPIARTI 2012 (UiTM). He hold several research grants, won several medals in research and innovation showcases and awarded several publication award and teaching awards. He has authored and co-authored 2 books in database system (2013) and this book received consolation prize by Society of Science and Mathematics Malaysia (PESAMA) in 2014 and WAP application (2009), published several both local and international book chapters (11), technical papers in conferences and peer-reviewed journals (>100) papers. He also involve in publishing articles in periodicals such as newspaper (Utusan Malaysia) and national magazine (Dewan Kosmik). He also served as guest editor for Special Issue in Wireless and Mobile Networks in International Journal of Advanced Computer Science and Applications (2011) and as Deputy Editor in Chief for Int. Journal of Software Engineering and Computing since 2009 and scholarly contributed as committee for conferences, editorial team and manuscript reviewers and also invited to be session chair in conferences. Latest, he also invited to be Advisory Committee for ICACM 2016 at Pune, India, and Track Chair for IEOM 2016 in Kuala Lumpur. His research interests are in data mining, artificial intelligence and computer vision, mobile and wireless computing, web-based applications. He is currently an active member of IEEE, IEEE Computer Society, IAEng, IACSIT and PECAMP (Society of Info. Retrieval and Knowledge Management Malaysia) and as Associate Member for Embedded Computing Research Group (UTHM), BigData Center (UTM), MySigBigData (UM), E-Community Research Center (UKM).

She holds a PhD in Engineering Management, from the University of Johannesburg,. Natalie has held various senior and executive positions over the last decade. She also chairs and serves on several boards and board committees as a Non-Executive Director. A seasoned motivational and key note speaker that boasts influence and authority–keeping the audience focused throughout her presentation.
As a Consultant, she leads and collaborates with a variety of experts to deliver sustainable business and personal results and is a seasoned motivational speaker. Natalie’s specialist subjects include leadership and management, coaching, change, emotional intelligence and strategic planning and a range of soft skills courses.
She has delivered several peer reviewed papers nationally and internationally. She has acted as a technical author, consultant editor and peer reviewer of a wide range of publications for safety journals and conference papers.
Amongst all her activities and achievements, as a seasoned governance, risk and compliance specialist she is also very passionate about health and safety and loves to share her knowledge and experience to help improve workplace safety. One of the fruits of her knowledge sharing is her self-published, co-authored “Guideline for Health and Safety representatives”.

Misheng’u is a Post-doctoral fellowship recipient, Rated Researcher (NRF) with a PhD(Eng) and several Certificates in M&E; Dispute Boards in PPP, Dispute Resolution Administration and Practice (DR-AP); Mini grid Solar; Solar Roof Tops; HIRA; OH&S; and in Managing Research Project; Supervision and Ethics. Has to date raised and Managed over US$ 18 Million of research funds from EU, Royal British Academy, Royal Academy of Engineering, AfDB, and WB. He has successfully supervised 13 PhD Candidates and examined 19 PhD Thesis. Further raised in excess of US$16 Million of research funds from EU, Royal British Academy, World Bank and the AfDB. He is an Examiner and Patent Reviewer for ARIPO, consults for the World Bank, European Union-funded Programmes, the NTU Strategic Development Consultants of Denmark, AECOM, the DFID inter alias. Among key strategic outputs Misheng’u has formulated include the National Policy for Nuclear and Radiation Protection, and Amendment bill on Nuclear and Radiation Protection, Developed a National Transport Policy for Road Construction Health and Safety for Kenya, developed a National Codes of practice and guidelines in Road Construction Occupational Health and Safety for Kenya and another for Zambia funded by EU, developed Technical documents for Rural Roads Climate Change Resilience and Mitigation Measures for the World Bank funded projects, evaluated loans performance acquired from World Bank by Eswatini among others and was a member of the team involved in the merging of the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality (CTMM) including planning for all infrastructure, facilities, housing, and budgeting up to 2070. Misheng’u was a Team Leader-for technical negotiations on behalf of the Zambian government and the Russian Government for the construction of a Centre for Nuclear Science and Research with a 10MW Thermal Nuclear Reactor, laboratory complex, a Multi-purpose irradiation and cyclotron-based nuclear medicine centres. He serves as a Development Team Member for Zambia Qualifications Authority (ZAQA) to develop Construction National Occupational Standards. He was a Member of the National Stakeholder Forum (Advisers) to the Construction Industry Development Board of South Africa, and reported to the Minister of Public Works. From 2012 to 2017, served as Vice President for the African region of the Chartered Institute of Building. In 2018 and 2019, he served as the first Chairperson for Lusaka Water Security Initiative Stakeholder Steering Committee. The organisation protects recharge points to aquifers and protects ground water from contaminations and over abstraction. He served as a programme Manager with Aganang Consulting Engineers managing ZAR 780 Million (US$156 Million), Municipal Infrastructure grant (ZAR3.6 Billion (US$620 Million) and ZAR3.17 Billion (US$534 Million)) in Gauteng Province among other projects.

Dr William Goriwondo is an engineer, researcher, academic and an entrepreneurship-minded professional. Resolute in contributing to strategies towards attainment of sustainability through innovation and utilisation of advanced and dynamic technologies as guided by the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR). He is a registered Professional Engineer with a Master of Science degree in Manufacturing Systems & Operations Management as well as a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Business Administration. Proven track record of technical, engineering, operational and strategic leadership, spanning over 25 years in industry and academia. He has worked in the manufacturing and other industries as engineer and production manager. Currently the Pro-Vice Chancellor for Innovation and Business Development at the National University of Science and Technology (NUST). Dr Goriwondo is an Engineering & Management Consultant. Member of the Institute of Directors Zimbabwe (IoDZ), Fellow and Board member of the Zimbabwe Institution of Engineers (ZIE). He has won prestigious national and International awards such as the K.G Stevens Awards and the Global Engineering Education Award for his work on Project Management and Engineering Education respectively. He is currently the Senior Vice President of the Zimbabwe Institution of Engineers (ZIE) and also appointed to sit on the Advisory Committee on technical issues for ZISCOSTEEL. He is the Zimbabwe Country Focal Point person in the programme on Strengthening Research and Innovation Management (SRIM II) in the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC).

Modelling the Framework for Doctoral Training in Southern Africa
Dr. Wilson R. Nyemba is a professional mechanical engineer with over 30 years of experience both in industry and academia. He holds a BSc Honours degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Zimbabwe, an MSc degree (distinction) in Advanced Mechanical Engineering from the University of Warwick in England and a Doctor of Engineering degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Johannesburg in South Africa. He is a recipient of several awards for excellence and outstanding research, with an impeccable and demonstrable record of securing grants and successfully executing projects of national and regional interest. He designed and developed a wide range of engineering products in different capacities in industry from product development to engineering management. He also formulated and led a number of successful ventures at the University of Zimbabwe where he served as Dean of Engineering for 10 years, Chairman of WaterNet and Project Manager for the Royal Academy of Engineering Projects in Southern Africa, from the Enriching Engineering Education Program (EEEP) in 2013 to the Higher Education Partnerships for Sub-Saharan Africa (HEP SSA), 2019 – 2021 and the current one 2022- 2024. These projects gave rise to the establishment of the Southern Africa Engineering Education Network (SAE2Net) of which he is the current Project Manager, driving various initiatives to improve the quality of engineering education and practice. Dr. Nyemba is an accomplished consultant and researcher with interests in Engineering Systems, Systems Thinking and Modelling, Computer Aided Engineering Design and Manufacture with a broad objective of bridging the gap between industry and academia, of which he has authored the book, “Bridging the Academia Industry Divide: Innovation and Industrialisation Perspective using Systems Thinking Research in Sub-Saharan Africa” in 2021. He also authored, “Computer Aided Design: Engineering Design and Modelling using AutoCAD”, published by CRC Press/Taylor & Francis Group in 2022, among several other journal and conference publications.

Bio: Falade Funso Alphonsus is a Nigerian and a Professor of civil engineering at University of Lagos, Nigeria. He earned Diploma in Quantity Surveying at Yaba College of Technology, Nigeria, in 1978. He completed his M.Sc (Civil Engineering) at the Moscow Institute of Civil Engineering in the USSR in 1984 and obtained PhD in Civil Engineering, from University of Lagos in 1998. Prof. Falade has authored over 70 articles on innovative construction materials and engineering education published in locally and internationally reputable journals as well as in proceedings of learned conferences. He has also made contributions to two (2) textbooks. In February, 2014, he made public presentation of a book titled ‘Strengthening of Distressed Buildings’. He has researched into the structural properties of bamboo and developed the technology for its successful incorporation as replacement of steel reinforcement in some structural elements. He has also researched extensively on Foamed Aerated Concrete. Prof. Falade has presented over 45 papers at workshops and seminars on such topics as Project Management, Quality Control, Maintenance of Facilities, and Contract Procurement Processes etc.
Prof. Falade is a member of some professional bodies both locally and internationally, including Fellow, The Nigerian Academy of Engineering, Fellow, Nigerian Society of Engineers, Fellow, African Engineering Education Association, Registered Engineers, Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria etc. He is a promoter of engineering education. He was the initiator of African Regional Conference on Engineering Education and the Chairman, Organizing Committee and the Editor of the Proceedings of the 1st, 2nd and 5th African Regional Conference on Engineering Education that were held at University of Lagos in 23rd – 25th September, 2002 , 20th – 22nd September, 2004 and 9th -12th September, 2013 respectively. He is the President of the African Engineering Education Association (AEEA) and former Vice-President, international Federation of Engineering Education Societies (2009-20012). He was appointed UNESCO Consultant in 2005.

Prof Amr Eltawil is the dean of the School of Innovative Design Engineering of the Egypt-Japan University of Science and Technology (E-JUST), Alexandria, Egypt. He is a professor of Industrial Engineering. He was the chairperson of the department of Industrial Engineering and Systems Management from 2011 to 2018. The research interests of Prof Eltawil are in the fields of applied operations research and discrete event simulation. Areas of interest include among others supply chain design and management, production planning and scheduling, service systems planning and management especially container terminal operations and management decisions, energy systems optimization, healthcare applications and call centres, as well as transportation and logistics. Prof Eltawil authored more than 80 papers published in international impacted journals and conferences.

IS THE IE IN 2023 AN IMAGINARY ENGINEER OR AN INDUSTRIAL ENGINEER?
Dr. Shahrukh A. Irani is the President of Lean and Flexible, llc, a consulting company founded in 2014 that delivers advisory, training and implementation services focused on Lean for high-mix low-volume manufacturing (aka JobshopLean). Previously, from 2012-2014, he worked as the Director of IE Research at Hoerbiger Corporation of America, Inc. (HCA), Houston, TX, to gain invaluable industry experience. In that position, he undertook projects to demonstrate the viability of JobshopLean in HCA’s high-mix low-volume (HMLV) manufacturing facilities. Prior to this industry job, from 1996-2012, he was an Associate Professor in the Department of Integrated Systems Engineering (ISE) at The Ohio State University (OSU). His research at OSU produced JobshopLean, a comprehensive methodology to adapt Lean for high-mix, low-volume (HMLV) small and medium enterprises (SME). Also, his team developed the PFAST (Production Flow Analysis and Simplification Toolkit) software that facilitates the implementation of JobshopLean. During his sixteen years at OSU, he received the Outstanding Faculty Award for excellence in teaching from the ISE department’s graduating classes of 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2009 and the 2002 Charles E. MacQuigg Outstanding Teaching Award from the College of Engineering. He served as the Director of the Facilities Planning and Design (FAPAD) division of the Institute of Industrial Engineers for 1999-2001 and 2001-2003. He is the Editor of the Handbook of Cellular Manufacturing Systems (1999, John Wiley). In 1996, he was voted Young Engineer of the Year by the Minnesota Federation of Engineering Societies and the Minneapolis Chapter of the Institute of Industrial Engineers.
