Abstract
The fourth industrial revolution “Industry 4.0” (Germany, 2011), with its automation, digitization and exponential technologies is changing the landscape of the industry and society and evolving into “Industry 5G” (Siemens, 2019) and Industry 5.0 (Europe, 2020). It is characterized by optimization and management of assets, sharing and security of big data, data analytics, Internet of Things (IoT), Internet of Behavior (IoB), Artificial and Augmented Intelligence (A2I). It is the transformation from physical to digital: the “Digital Twin”. Industry 4.0 and 5.0 is going beyond affecting mainly the manufacturing sector by addressing the total enterprise and the society in order to achieve a “Smart-Digital-Green (SDG) Enterprise and Society” (Japan, 2017 and Canada, 2021). This revolution is also creating the concept of “Circular Economy”, as compared to the traditional linear economy, with great impact on sustainability and waste elimination. The products will evolve from a “traditional passive product” to a “smart connected product” using lots of sensors to provide a living experience and real time connectivity to the customers and the manufacturers for continuous improvement. Compared to the previous revolutions, SDG Transformation (or Industry 5.0) will be characterized by: real-time connectivity, speed of implementation, human-centricity, resilience, agility and sustainability.
Industry 4.0/5.0 will drive a major change in tomorrow’s workforce in order to have them ready for a rapidly evolving business environment. Some jobs will disappear; hence companies have to protect their workforce and not the jobs, by continuous skilling, reskilling, upskilling and multiskilling. Educational institutions need to respond to Industry 4.0/5.0 needs, provide broader skill sets and close the gap in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) skills. There will be a need for “Data Scientists” with strong ICT and AI skills, user interface design, advanced analytics, root-cause-analysis skills, creative and integration skills. Embedded E-Learning tools to be used in real world situations and ICT skills need to be integrated in all university’s curricula.
This presentation will discuss the global landscape of this revolution, its impact on future workforce and highlight few initiatives on how Canada has been addressing the future technology and skills challenges of the SDG Transformation through collaboration between educational institutions and industry, as well as strategic government investments.
