Patrick Dallasega is an Assistant Professor of Factory Planning and Project Management at the Faculty of Science and Technology of the Free University of Bolzano (Italy). He studied at the Free University of Bolzano (Italy), at the Polytechnic University of Turin (Italy) and got his PhD at the University of Stuttgart (Germany). From 2005 until 2010, he worked in the fields of plant and factory planning in a local food processing industry. Later, from 2012 until 2015, he was employed as Research Associate at Fraunhofer Italia Research where he managed and executed several research projects for private and public customers. Since 2016, he has been employed as Assistant Professor at the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano. His main research interests are in, supply chain management, Industry 4.0, lean construction, lean manufacturing and production planning and control in MTO and ETO enterprises.

Fazel Ansari is Head of Research Group “Smart and Knowledge-Based Maintenance” at the Vienna University of Technology (TU Wien) since 2018. He also leads Fraunhofer Austria’s Group of “Digitalization and Competence Management”, since 2021. Fazel obtained his Habilitation degree in Industrial Engineering at the TU Wien and his summa cum laude PhD in computer science from the University of Siegen, in the specialization of knowledge-based systems and knowledge management. He holds a M.Sc. degree in Mechatronics from Univeristy of Siegen and B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering from University of Tehran. Fazel is an interdisciplinary researcher conducting fundamental- and applied-oriented research at the intersection of AI, industrial engineering and production management. His research focuses specifically on Human-centred Cyber Physical Production Systems, operations and maintenance management, knowledge management 4.0 and Industrial AI. Fazel is engaged in several international scientific associations, namely as an IEEE Senior Member, member of IFAC’s Technical Committee 5.2 “Management and Control in Manufacturing and Logistics”, and member of Scientific Committee and Head of Working Group “Work-Based Learning” at the International Association of Learning Factories (IALF).

Corina Pacher is an Education Project Manager at the Life Long Learning Department at Graz University of Technology. She is mainly responsible for the project management of European projects, support in the development and expansion of CVET offers, and development of didactic concepts. She studied pedagogical and educational science at the University of Klagenfurt (Austria) with a specialization on social and inclusive education (master’s degree) and on professional education (master’s degree). Currently, Ms. Pacher is conducting her PhD in the field of profiling competence profiles for European Industrial Engineering and Management (IEM) curricula. During and after her studies, she gained work experience, e.g., as Head of educational programs and in different social public service enterprises as a social education worker. Currently, she is mainly focusing on raising the awareness for engineering education 4.0 by connecting research, education, and society.

Manuel Woschank received a Ph.D. in Management Sciences with summa cum laude from the University of Latvia (Latvia) and the Habilitation in Industrial Engineering and Management from the Montanuniversitaet Leoben (Austria). He is currently Deputy Head of the Chair of Industrial Logistics at the Montanuniversitaet Leoben and an Adjunct Associate Professor at the Faculty of Business, Management, and Economics at the University of Latvia. He was a visiting scholar at the Technical University of Kosice and the Chiang Mai University. His research interests include the areas of production planning and control, logistics 4.0 concepts and technologies, behavioral decision making, and engineering education.

Erwin Rauch is an Assistant Professor in Manufacturing Technology and Systems at Free University of Bolzano, Italy. He received his BSc in Logistics and Production Engineering from the Free University in Bolzano (Italy). He also holds an MSc in Mechanical Engineering from the Technical University Munich (TUM) and a Master in Business Administration from the TUM Business School. Since 2007, he worked in a Management Consultancy as a Consultant for Lean management. Later he obtained his PhD in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Stuttgart in Germany. Since 2014, he is Assistant Professor at the Free University of Bolzano and in 2017 Visiting Researcher at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) in Worcester, MA (USA). Further, he is Head of the Smart Mini Factory laboratory for Industry 4.0 application at the Free University of Bolzano. His research interests include industry 4.0, smart and sustainable manufacturing and complex systems design.

Kerstin Johansen is Senior Associate Professor at Jönköping University and has more than 10 years of industrial experience. Kerstin is research leader of the Production Development Group in the Department of Industrial Product Development, Production and Design. Her research interest is on integrated product and production development, human-robot collaboration and sustainable manufacturing. She is project leader of the Swedish research project “RaSP – Resilient and Sustainable Production – Proactive greenfield and brownfield production development”. Dr Johansen joined Scientific Reports as an Editorial Board Member in 2021.

Susanne Vernim is a member of the management board and Head of the Department for Sustainable Production at the Institute for Machine Tools and Industrial Management (iwb) at the Technical University of Munich (TUM). After two years in the automotive supplier industry, she started as a research associate at the iwb in 2014. In 2020 she finished her doctoral degree on the topic of workplace requirements for the assembly personnel in the digital transformation. Her current research interest focuses on human-centred manufacturing and Industry 5.0, the digitization of manufacturing workplaces, and the sustainable design and operation of manufacturing systems. Dr Vernim joined Scientific Reports as an Editorial Board Member in 2021.

Emmanuel Francalanza is the Head of Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering at the University of Malta. Before joining the University of Malta, he was employed by Methode Electronics Malta Ltd, an automotive switchgear OEM based in Malta, where he worked in the fields of both design and manufacturing. Dr Ing. Emmanuel Francalanza graduated with Honours in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Malta in 2005 and with an MSc in Integrated Product Development in 2008. His doctoral research involved the investigation of complex issues relating to supporting factory planners during the design of factories and their underlying manufacturing systems. His research interests range from the use of AI and collaborative robotics for smart and sustainable manufacturing, to the application of design methods in product development.

Matthias Wolf is an Assistant Professor in Industrial Engineering and Management at Graz University of Technology. Since 2021, he is an assistant professor and deputy head of the Institute of Innovation and Industrial Management. His research interests include industry 4.0, human-centered work system design, Industry 5.0, green production, and engineering education with a focus on learning factories.

Mario Fargnoli is currently employed at the Italian Ministry of Agriculture and collaborates with Sapienza – University of Rome as Contract Professor at the Faculty of Civil and Industrial Engineering, where he earned his PhD in 2005. From 2005 to 2007 he worked at the Department of Precision Machinery of the University of Tokyo as JSPS Fellow Researcher. His research interests mainly concern design for safety and human error, product-service systems (PSS), ecodesign as well as engineering tools and methods such as Quality Function Deployment (QFD), Analytic Hierarchical Process (AHP) and Analytic Network Process (ANP), Life Cycle Assessment.
