34th IEOM Global Engineering Education
IEOM Society International addresses the issues of Global Engineering Education. There are various levels of readiness of engineering graduates from various parts of the world. One of the main themes is how to reduce the readiness gap of engineering graduates around the world. The special focus is given to Industrial Engineering and Manufacturing Engineering including Engineering Management. Are the engineering graduates ready to take on the challenges of the current global economy? With the great success of Global Engineering Education Series of last IEOM conferences, IEOM Johor Bahru, Malaysia Conference will have a dedicated session for the 34th Global Engineering Education where distinguished speakers will discuss the readiness of engineering graduates for workforce around the world. Featured speakers will be from various part of the world to address engineering education challenges and opportunities.
This event is jointly organized by the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Sebelas Maret in collaboration with the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Diponegoro, and Centre for Engineering Education (CEE), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, as the 2nd Indonesia Engineering Education Conference (the 2nd IEEC) in Indonesia.

Dr. Intan Zaurah Mat Darus is a Professor at School of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. She was born in 1976 in State of Melaka, Malaysia. She received her First Class B.Eng. (Hons.) degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Wales College Cardiff, Wales, United Kingdom in 1998 and later her Ph.D.in Automatic Control and Systems Engineering from the University of Sheffield, United Kingdom in 2004. Her current research interests are instrumentation measurement and control, modelling and simulation of dynamical system, thermal energy, automotive system , robotic and automation system utilizing soft computing techniques, evolutionary algorithms and artificial intelligence. She is the international editorial board member of the Journal of Low Frequency Noise, Vibration and Active Control, Journal of Artificial Intelligence Research (AIR), Jurnal Mekanikal and Journal of Institute Engineer Malaysia (IEM). Professor Dr Intan Z. Mat Darus has published over 200 journal and conference papers and has received over 30 research grants, industrial collaboration and consultancy projects in these area. She gained several research and service awards including from the Ministry of Science and Technology and Innovation Malaysia and several research awards from Seoul International Invention Fair. She has supervised over 60 postgraduate research students which include 12 PhD graduates since 2004. She had 22 years teaching experience in the undergraduate and postgraduate studies at the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia since 1999. She also held several posts as academic administrator in the UTM since 2012 until today including Postgraduate Academic Manager, Head of the Department of Applied Mechanics and Design, Deputy Dean in the Office of Undergraduate Studies. Currently, she is the Director of the Centre of Academic Experiential Learning, UTM Institute of Life-Ready Graduates, where she is responsible for the academic development of all 16,000 of undergraduate students in UTM

Dr. Abu Masud is a professor of industrial and manufacturing engineering at Wichita State University. He has been named the Boeing Global Engineering Professor at Wichita State University. In this new post, Dr. Masud is expected to advance the College of Engineering’s strategic alliances for global enrichment and experiential learning of students as well as international research collaborations and partnerships. He received Duane and Velma Wallace Outstanding Educator Award from WSU College of Engineering. Previously he was held various positions at Wichita State including associate dean, graduate school (2008-2013), coordinator, college ABET affairs (2006-2008), associate dean, college of engineering (2004-2005), chair, industrial and manufacturing engineering department (1994-2004) and graduate coordinator of IME (1991-94, 1996-98, 2001-2004). Dr. Masud has engaged with various companies and governmental research centers including NASA Langley Research Center, VA, NASA/ASEE Summer Faculty Fellow (1991 and 1992), Boeing, Consulting Analyst, and Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research. He is member of Accreditation Review Council (2011-2014). Dr. Masud published book, book chapters, and numerous journal and conference papers. He is registered Professional Engineer at Kansas State. Dr. Masud is an IIE fellow. He received Ph.D. and M.S. in Industrial Engineering from Kansas State University, and B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering & Technology.

Currently he is leading his faculty as Dean since 2015 and contributing in many efforts to improve the engineering education in his institution, such as introducing OBE (Outcame Based Education) curriculum, active learnings, international accreditation etc. He also actively engaged with local and international researchers. Zaki Yamani Zakaria is the Director of Centre for Engineering Education (CEE), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. He has been with the School of Chemical & Energy Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) since 2008. He acquired his first degree in Chemical Engineering from University of Bradford, UK in 1999; Chemical Engineering Master’s Degree, and PhD from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) in 2004 and 2013, respectively. His main research interests are in engineering education, catalytic reaction engineering, and safety, health & environment (SHE). Before joining the faculty, he was a practicing engineer (2003-2008). Dr. Zaki became a Professional Engineer (BEM) and Chartered Engineer (IChemE) in 2010. He was appointed as a Professional Technologist in 2018 by Malaysia Board of Technologist (MBOT). He was appointed as Research Fellow under Centre for Engineering Education (CEE) in 2019 and two years after that appointed as the Director of UTM CEE. He has actively been involved in engineering education since 2014 in the area of Active Learning (AL), Cooperative Learning (CL) and Problem-Based Learning (PBL). Dr. Zaki has been involved in numerous AL, CL, PBL courses and workshops as co-trainer and facilitator since 2017. He is also an Editor for ASEAN Journal for Engineering Education (AJEE) and a member of Society of Engineering Education Malaysia (SEEM) since 2020, besides once in a while delivering talks related to Engineering Education Experiential sharing. In 2021 he participated in the Safety Champion in Engineering Education (SCEE) Fellowship program, which was organized under Royal Academy of Engineering (RAE), UK.

Assoc. Professor Divina Gracia D. Ronquillo finished her undergraduate and graduate degrees, both in Electronics and Communications Engineering from Batangas State University, The National Engineering University. As a Professional Electronics Engineer and an ASEAN Engineer, she continues to pursue this track as she finishes her dissertation on her Doctorate Degree in Electronics Engineering at the National Engineering University. Assoc. Prof. Ronquillo is a Master Trainer of the Conceive-Design-implement-Operate (CDIO) Framework for Rethinking Engineering Education and an Outcomes-Based Quality Assurance (OBQA) Accreditor of The Accrediting Agency of Chartered Colleges and Universities in the Philippines (AACUP). She is likewise a Program Evaluator of the Philippine Technological Council (PTC) – Accreditation and Certification Board for Engineering and Technology (ACBET) – Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) and the university’s head for Outcomes-Based Education (OBE) implementation and program accreditation. She is affiliated with the National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP) as an Associate Member, ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organizations (AFEO) as a Lifetime Member of ASEAN Engineering Register, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) – Instrumentation & Measurement Society as a Professional Member, and Institute of Electronics Engineers of the Philippines (IECEP) – Batangas Chapter and Philippine Technological Council Women Engineers Network (PTC WEN) as a Regular Member.
Her research work and publications mostly focus on the application of and innovation in electronics engineering as well as in engineering education and quality assurance. Her work on the “Natural Light Collection System for Indoor Crop Production”, co-authored by Dr. Anton Louise P. De Ocampo, was awarded 1st place in the Best Developmental Paper Award Category during the 31st Regional Symposium on Research, Development and Extension Highlights (RSRDEH) last 2018. With over twenty years of teaching and administrative experience, she steered her department in the accreditation of engineering programs at BatStateU by the US-based ABET in 2016. She continues to serve the National Engineering University by leading the Center for Innovation in Engineering Education (CIEE) as its Director and the Quality Assurance Management (QAM) as its Head.

Dr. Reynato A. Gamboa is a Registered Electrical Engineer and a Chartered Engineer of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), United Kingdom. He finished his Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering at the Pablo Borbon Memorial Institute of Technology (now Batangas State University, The National Engineering University), Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering Major in Power Engineering at the University of the Philippines Diliman, and Doctor of Philosophy in Engineering Major in Engineering Education at Taylor’s University, Subang Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia.With forty years of teaching experience, he has held various positions in three universities. He served as a: Senior Lecturer at the KDU University College (KDU) Petaling Jaya Campus in Selangor, Malaysia; Senior Lecturer I and Programme Director in the School of Engineering at Taylor’s University, Subang Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia; and Chairman of the EE Department and Executive Assistant for Knowledge Management and Innovation to the Office of the President at the Batangas State University. During his service at Taylor’s University, he was appointed as Outcomes-Based Education (OBE) Consultant by the School of Computing, where he also designed and developed a Module and Programme-level OBE Assessment Model for the School of Engineering. His professional and research work encompasses topics such as OBE, Curriculum Frameworks, and the application of learning pedagogies in the School of Engineering—and as of April 2022, he has had a total of thirty-five publications. His research interest includes Embedded Generation, Power System Design, Simulation and Analysis, Energy Audit, and Engineering Education, which he continues to do research on up to this day. Amongst the awards he received for his research works and publications was the Gold Medal Award for his Project: Redesigning Engineering Curriculum Vertical Through Industry 4.0 during the 2nd IDE4 Teaching and Learning Exhibition (IDE4TE) 2019 in Cyberjaya, Malaysia. At present, Dr. Gamboa sits as the Dean of the College of Engineering, Architecture and Fine Arts of the Batangas State University, The National Engineering University. He aspires to continue on leading the College toward greater heights.

She has been involved and organised in numerous the Community-Based Engineering Service-Learning Program at local and international level. Assoc. Prof. Ts. Dr. Habibah @ Norehan Haron received her B. Eng (Hons) in Manufacturing Engineering from Kingston Polytechnic, UK and MSc degree in Manufacturing Systems Engineering from Warwick University. Later she continues her PhD study in Engineering Education from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. She is currently an Associate Professor at Razak Faculty of Technology and Informatics, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur. She is also a contract lecturer at Meiji University, Japan; and a special program lecturer at Saffat Academy, Sudan. Her areas of research are in Engineering Education, STEM and Engineering Business Management. Her research and activities have led to publications in books, journals, conference proceedings and articles in the newsletters, and have also qualified her to receive over 20 awards. She has more than 10 intellectual properties. She is also an active committee member of Women Engineers Section (WE) of The Institution of Engineers Malaysia; represented Malaysia for women engineers at the Annual Meeting of Asia Pacific Nation’s (APNN) of International Network of Women Engineers and Scientists (INWES). Apart from her other official duties as an academic staff, she is actively contributing back to the society; organizes community activities for the children of Orang Asli, rural and urban poor. Among the main and consistent projects since 2014, as the founder of Adopt a Kampung team, she had developed and implemented STREAM Fun Learning Toy Libraries, which accommodate various STEM Programs with the holistic and integrated concept of Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STREAM) to remote, rural and urban poor communities in several states in Malaysia.

She works as a Senior Lecturer in the School of Electrical, Faculty of Engineering after receiving her Ph.D. in 2016 from UTM. She had published more than 30 journals and conference papers and received more than 20 research grants, nationally and internationally. Currently, she is the Deputy Director at the Centre for Engineering Education (CEE), UTM. She is also the Assistant Honorary Secretary for the Society of Engineering Malaysia (SEEM). She is a practitioner in scholarly engineering education practices and involves as a facilitator for Outcome Based Education (OBE), Problem-Based Learning (PBL) as well as Student-Centered Learning (SCL) workshops locally and globally. She is a reviewer for Education for Chemical Engineers, the ASEAN Journal of Engineering Education, and several conferences related to engineering education. Furthermore, she is actively involved in research related to engineering education such as engineering epistemology, pedagogy, and curriculum development. She is most passionate about engineering education and become one of the UTM’s Future Ready Educator (FREE) Support Group Leaders. She has won several awards related to education such as Teaching Award, Blended Learning Award, and Sakura Science Plan from Japan Science and Technology Agency.

She received her Master and Ph.D. degree of Industrial Engineering from Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), Bandung, Indonesia, and Bachelor of Statistics from Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS) Surabaya, Indonesia.
Meanwhile, the Engineer profession (Ir) was obtained from the Engineer Profession Program at Gajah Mada University (UGM) Yogyakarta. Her research interests are production, distribution, and transportation; supply chain engineering; and humanitarian logistics in disaster operations and management. In addition to researching logistics operations in disaster conditions, Amelia also researches logistics operations under normal conditions, especially the distribution and transportation systems. She received several grants to conduct research in humanitarian logistics operations.

The biggest project he had executed is to reduce organization cost in product design and development with the result of RM 13 million per year. Dr. Farrah Fayyaz is a Lecturer in the Centre for Engineering in Society in Gina Cody School of Engineering and Computer Science at Concordia University. She has a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Pakistan and Ph.D. in Engineering Education from Purdue University, USA. She has been teaching engineering students and doing research in engineering education for over fifteen years now. She is a Fulbright fellow and currently director and member-at-large of the Canadian Engineering Education Association. Additionally, now she is a guest editor of a special issue of IEEE transactions on education, titled, Conceptual Learning of Mathematics Intensive Concepts in Engineering. Her research focuses on conceptual learning of mathematics-intensive engineering concepts. One of her recent passions which came out of her service role at Concordia University is helping all final-year undergraduate engineering students at Concordia University to understand the ethical, legal, social, environmental, and entrepreneurial aspects of their capstone design.
