The simulation study must illustrate Operational Excellence concepts that review current process/system performance and develop strategies with action plans for improvement. The study will allow the participant students to gain awareness, and knowledge and critically demonstrate the application of the Operational Excellence strategy to optimize complex processes. Participating student teams will:
- Develop an understanding of utilizing a structured methodology to optimize complex integrated processes
- Gain insight into driving critical decision points in optimization based on data instead of opinion(s) or emotion(s)
- Compare and contrast different solutions and develop suggestions on improvement action(s) with the maximum payoff.
Activity
Your team is requested to focus on a specific industry of your choice that has significant gaps in the delivery of expected results. The process/system optimization objective is to ideal state (low cost and large profit). Industries can be but are not limited to
- Manufacturing
- Service
- Finance
Your team has been tasked to optimize a complex process/system to ensure the most efficient and cost-effective system. Applying the Operational Excellence toolsets the team must provide specific improvement actions to increase system optimization. Depending on the selected concern, different tools will be employed throughout the assessment to narrow Key Process Input Variables (KPIVs) that are driving unacceptable output(s).
The report must also incorporate the following minimum requirements:
- Value Stream Map of Process
- Characterization of the system for each element from a real-life scenario. Reliable data from the actual system is required.
- Effectiveness
- Throughput
- Quality
- Productivity
- Quantification of Performance Improvement of Recommendations (minimum of 3 proposed improvements
- Cost Benefits Assessment Recommendation
- Use any commercial simulation software i.e. Arena, ProModel, Witness, FlexSim, Simul8, ExtendSim, PlantSim, Simio, etc.
The evaluation of the concern utilizing Operational Excellence must include only the tools necessary to resolve the concern. The focus should concentrate on a clear and minimalistic path to resolving the concern. Your team is free to follow any research, data collection, and or analysis methodology that you/your team consider the most appropriate to address the required task.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Case study must be related to real-life applications
- Practitioners or academicians can join the competition
- Papers can be industry projects as part of a course or co-op/internship, or research projects done at the academic institution.
- The paper must be presented at the IEOM Oman Conference.
